Repair

Amherst College in 1821

As is outlined in our Vision & Values statement, our commitment to a restorative frame underscores our belief that historical wrongs and racial disparities have left lasting inequities at the College. These legacies have posed impediments, and continue to impose upon, our efforts toward building an inclusive, thriving, and just community.

We are an institution dedicated to learning. Pursuing the full truth of the past should be rewarding and meaningful for everyone. This process inherently necessitates the introduction of complexity and nuance, and to do this work successfully we must make our history easily accessible to all members of our community, whether they are physically present on our campus or exploring our digital landscapes. The racial history work we have chosen to undertake intends to build upon the relationships that are strong, repair the ones that are fraught, and establish those that have been missing or neglected.

Amherst College is in the process of developing relationships with various community partners.
